Congratulations to Avril Carty, Javotte Hanlon and Rachel McPartlin whose entry for Junk Kouture has secured a place in the regional final. The entry title Celtic Couture is designed using rushes, old bed clothes, nets and leaves. Celtic Couture captures Ireland in an outfit! Using strong historic Irish figures such as Countess Markievicz as inspiration we produced a design that incorporates our Irish culture and in particular the strength of Celtic women.
Their design and materials used depended on old Irish traditionally women’s life skills from the past like knitting, sewing and weaving. We depended greatly on nature where we sourced our leaves and rushes. Local shops also let us use there waste products for our design.
“We wanted to get away from the fast fashion culture that is ever so present in the 21st century. We wanted to create a design that was special to us and unique. Our idea is especially relevant as 2018 is the year of Cultural Heritage in the EU.” Best wishes to the girls who take to the stage in the Helix in Dublin on Wednesday the 7th of March. The girls would like to thank everyone who helped in their online vote and to their teacher Ms Conaty and Ms O’Gara for all their help and guidance.
